POKER ODDS

If you control the odds - you win more and more. This is a simple fact - but you need patience and determination to accomplish this task.

Texas Hold'em is played with a deck of 52 cards and the odds of a certain type of card appearing can be mathematically calculated. You don't have to know the exact odds but rather only the round figures. These will come in handy when you have to decide whether to play, bet, call, or raise.

All you have to do is divide the number of cards you need to improve your hand with the number of hidden cards. The result is what is called pot odds. This is compared to the profit you stand to make. You decide according to the higher ratio. If for instance the pot odds are 40/4 (which come to 1/10); and if you win you stand to make $400 by wagering $10 (which comes to 1/100). You need to compare the two - and since 1/100 is relatively bigger than 1/10 - you should call. (If it's vice versa - you should fold or be aware that the odds are not in your favor.)

But always bear in mind that you will still lose at times even if you become an expert at Hold'em odds. Unfortunately, losing is an integral part of gambling and it's futile to fight against it. But that doesn't mean you should give up. Have patience and you will be successful.

You shouldn't rely only on your cards but also try and guess what your fellow Hold'em players are 'hiding under their sleeve.'

Here are a few basic terms and examples associated with poker odds:

Outs - The number of cards left in the deck that will improve your hand.
"I had four spades on the turn, so I had 9 outs to make that flush."

Pot Odds - The odds you get when analyzing the current size of the pot vs. your next call.
"There's $200 already in the pot, and only another $10 bet coming at me, so my pot odds are good if I hit that flush."

Bet Odds - The odds you get as a result of evaluating the number of callers to a raise. "With a 1 in 5 chance of hitting it and knowing all six of these guys are going to call my bet; my bet odds are also good."

Implied Odds - The odds you are getting after the assumed result of betting for the remainder of the hand. "Since I think these guys are going to call on the turn and river, my implied odds are excellent."
